Derry condemns ‘egomaniac’ Clattenburg
Shaun Derry has launched a scathing attack on Mark Clattenburg after controversial comments made by the former referee.
Clattenburg has caused a stir by saying he went into Chelsea’s game against Tottenham in May 2016 “with a gameplan” and ‘allowed Tottenham to self-destruct’ in the 2-2 draw at Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea’s comeback from 2-0 down to take a point confirmed Leicester as champions.
Nine Spurs players were yellow-carded in a bad-tempered game and Clattenburg has suggested he could have sent three off but did not do so because he wanted to avoid accusations that he cost them the title.
Speaking to Talksport, former QPR midfielder Derry, now Cambridge United manager, said: “This is typical Mark Clattenburg.
“For the times he reffed me, I just thought he was an egomaniac.
“I played in the Premier League with QPR, and QPR – with the absolute respect for that football club – is a small Premier League club.
“So whenever you went up against an opposition, for me I always felt like he referred to opposition players on first-name terms – that was consistent of Mark Clattenburg.
“It annoyed me, as a player. For him, it’s all about his ego.”
