Duo make debuts as QPR win at Southend

New signings Richard Dunne and Karl Henry made their debuts as QPR limbered up for the new season with a 3-1 win at Southend.

Andy Johnson, Stephane Mbia and Nedum Onuoha scored Rangers’ goals and Junior Hoilett was unlucky not to also find the net.

Johnson, who has looked sharp since returning from a long-term knee injury, finished well after Shaun Wright-Phillips’ poor pass ended up ricocheting into the striker’s path.

Southend were level at the break courtesy of Clint Hill’s own goal but Mbia, on as a half-time substitute along with Dunne, headed home at the far post soon after the restart.

Onuoha, impressive at centre-back, sealed Rangers’ win when he netted from Hoilett’s right-wing corner.

The likes of Alejandro Faurlin, Ji-sung Park and Jermaine Jenas, who did not feature at Roots Hall, are due to play in a behind-closed-doors friendly against Leyton Orient on Saturday.

Midfielder Gary O’Neil, a free agent after leaving West Ham, may also play ahead of a possible move to Rangers.

QPR: Green; Simpson, Onuoha, Hill, Yun (Dunne 45); Wright-Phillips, Henry (Sutherland 68), Granero (Mbia 45), Hoillett; Zamora, Johnson.
