QPR boss Mark Hughes insists Adel Taarabt’s absence will not affect his team’s chances of causing an upset in this weekend’s west London derby.
The Moroccan’s sending-off against Tottenham means he is suspended for Sunday’s vital game at Stamford Bridge, where the stakes will be high for both sides.
Chelsea are chasing a top-four finish, while Rangers know one win from their remaining three matches could be enough to keep them in the Premier League.
Taarabt has been instrumental in taking the R’s close to safety, scoring in their victories against Spurs and Arsenal.
His ban is an untimely blow but Hughes has the option of recalling striker Djibril Cisse, who recently served a suspension.
“It’s a bit of a loss, obviously, but we can cope. We’ve got good players to come in,” said Hughes.
“Djibril didn’t play in the game against Tottenham and he’s an option for me. We’ll be okay.”
Taarabt’s dismissal came after he petulantly kicked the ball away and was shown a second yellow card.
It belied the fact that the 22-year-old, whose temperament has often been questioned, has shown greater maturity in recent months.
Hughes added: “There’s been a marked difference and that’s a credit to him. He’s embraced what we’ve told him and looks a better player for it.
“He’s still a young player and I just sense that he’s maturing. His understanding of the game and what’s required is getting much better.”
