Bond in the dark over Barton and Defoe
QPR assistant manager Kevin Bond said Joey Barton’s future was no closer to being resolved following the controversial midfielder’s return against Sheffield Wednesday.
Barton was handed a starting place for Rangers’ 2-1 win against the Owls – his first appearance for the club since an infamous violent outburst after being sent off at Manchester City last year.
Back after a season on loan at Marseille, Barton has discussed a financial settlement to leave Loftus Road and is expected to move on before the transfer window closes.
But Bond, speaking to the media in place of manager Harry Redknapp who is on crutches following a knee operation, insisted the player warranted a first-team recall.
He said: “I don’t know what the future holds for Joey. I’m not sure Joey Barton knows what the future holds for him.
“Truthfully, since he has been back with us he’s trained well and conducted himself well.
“Harry wanted to pick the best possible team for the game and that team included Joey.”
Bond added that he was “surprised” by reports Redknapp is looking to sign England striker Jermain Defoe from Tottenham.
He added: “I didn’t read it but I’ve heard about it. I know absolutely nothing about Jermain Defore or the speculation.”
Wednesday boss Dave Jones felt aggrieved, believing his team were twice denied a clear penalty.
Michail Antonio went down under a first-half challenge from Armand Traore and Jacques Maghoma was later booked for diving despite appearing to be tripped in the area by Barton.
The incident occurred shortly after Barton had been yellow-carded for a foul.
Bond said: “I haven’t actually seen either of them but I am led to believe the second one was a penalty.
“All I would say in defence of the officials is that I don’t think they ever mean to give a wrong decision. If he gave a wrong decision it was in good faith.
“It’s unfortunate for Sheffield Wednesday, who I thought did well today, but mistakes are made.
“We’re really pleased. We haven’t had that winning feeling in the dressing room nearly often enough during the time we’ve been here.
“We’re far from the finished article but we showed a lot of spirit and a lot we can build on.”
