Jordanne Whiley’s bid to retain her US Open women’s doubles title ended with a surprise semi-final defeat at Flushing Meadows.
The Ickenham-based 23-year-old was also aiming to reach her eighth consecutive grand slam doubles final, alongside partner Yui Kamiji.
The pair won the opening set on a tie-break against Marjolein Buis of the Netherlands and Germany’s Sabine Ellerbrock.
However they lost the second set 6-1, which sent the match into a deciding tie-break. Whiley and Kamiji fought back from 4-0 and saved one match point but eventually succumbed 10-6.
It is the first time since the 2013 US Open that Whiley has failed to reach a grand slam doubles final, but she remains in the singles.
