Whiley beaten in epic French Open final
Jordanne Whiley’s bid for a sixth consecutive Grand Slam wheelchair doubles title ended after defeat in a marathon final at Roland Garros.
The Ickenham-based Whiley and her partner Yui Kamiji were beaten by 10-8 in a deciding tie-break by second seeds Jiske Griffioen and Aniek Van Koot.
The Dutch pair had seen off Whiley and Kamiji respectively in the singles earlier in the week and have now ended their unbeaten streak in Grand Slams that stretches back to 2013.
Neither pairing could hold their serve in a tense first set, with 10 breaks leading to the inevitable tie-break – which Griffioen and Van Koot won 7-1 .
Whiley and Kamiji broke early in the second and although their opponents hit back later in the set, the Anglo-Japanese pair broke again and took the set 6-3.
Deciders in doubles are the first to 10 points and after a tight tussle, Griffioen and Van Koot edged it to deny Whiley and Kamiji another title.
