Martin Gould claimed another major scalp as he beat Masters champion Shaun Murphy to reach the last eight of the Players Championship.
The Pinner potter, who last week defeated world champion Mark Selby on his run to the semi-finals of the World Grand Prix, pinched several tight frames to gain the upper hand in the best-of-seven clash.
A break of 50 got Gould off to a good start, but world number eight Murphy levelled with visits of 46 and 64.
Gould came from behind in the next two frames, edging both to lead 3-1, but Murphy’s 61 in frame five reduced the arrears.
However world number 24 Gould finished with a flourish, getting among the balls first and recording a 75 which proved enough to secure his progress.
It avenged Gould’s defeat by Murphy in the 2011 Players Championship final, as well as those in the 2011 UK Championship, 2012 Masters and 2013 World Championship.
He will take on Mark King or Judd Trump in Friday’s quarter-finals.
