Martin Gould secured safe passage into the second round of the UK Championship at the York Barbican with a 6-4 win over Lee Page.
The Pinner Potter was on top throughout but, at 5-4, Page had a chance of levelling the match before Gould took advantage of a mistake to progress.
Gould, who plays Rod Lawler or Alex Borg in the second round on Sunday afternoon, told West London Sport: “The first four frames were pretty good but then it got very scrappy.
“He was getting the run of the balls at times and I started to worry if I was destined to lose but I got over the line and that’s what matters.
“I am pleased to get through and looking forward to the weekend.”
Gould, 33, has had an impressive season so far, reaching his first ranking event semi-final at the Wuxi Classic in China and only missing out on title success at the Bulgarian Open in Sofia where he lost to the in-form Shaun Murphy.
