Gould beats Ebdon to reach semi-finals
Martin Gould continued his fine form at the World Grand Prix by securing a place in Saturday’s semi-finals with an impressive 4-2 win over former world champion Peter Ebdon.
Gould, who beat world number one Mark Selby to set up the meeting with Ebdon, once again lost the first frame of the best-of-seven match at the new event in north Wales
But after Ebdon’s break of 80, world number 24 Gould rattled off three consecutive breaks of 50-plus to go 3-1 ahead.
As with the win over Selby, Gould’s opponent closed to within a frame at 3-2.
But the Pinner potter, 33, responded with a 35 and two further similar breaks to set up a semi-final tussle with either Judd Trump or Mark Williams in Llandudno.
Gould said: “I felt I was hitting the ball really nicely. When I’m feeling in that mood, virtually everything goes in.
“I’ve felt in good form all season. I’ve had some good results, I’ve had some bad results. But most of the time I’ve played well.”
The new World Grand Prix is not a ranking event but has a prize fund of £300,000 with £100,000 for the winner.
