Gould aiming to impress in front of TV cameras

Martin Gould says it was a huge relief to progress to the televised stages of the UK Championship.

World number 24 Gould rattled off four frames in a row to beat Allan Taylor 6-2 in his first-round match on Tuesday and plays Gary Wilson in the second round on Saturday afternoon.

The Pinner potter, 34, told West London Sport: “The worst feeling you can have is to go out on the first day and have to watch it on the television. You don’t want that so it’s a big relief.

“It will be nice to get back here on Saturday with a packed house and the TV coverage. When the TV cameras come, that’s when it feels like the tournament starts.”

Gould, who reached his first ranking event final at this season’s Australian Open, said he is determined to make his mark when he returns to York’s Barbican Centre, aiming to reach the third round of the tournament for the first time.

“If I can produce four frames in a row like that again, then who knows what can happen at the end of it,” he said.

“Everyone goes in to every tournament hoping to win it. My aim is to take one match at a time, keep doing what I am doing and maintain my focus.”
