Oxford’s Maxie Scheske spoke of her delight after the dark blues secured their second straight Women’s Boat Race victory ahead of the event’s move to west London in 2015.
Scheske, who grew up in St Margarets, sat in the three seat as Oxford beat Cambridge by four lengths in the final running of the event in Henley on Thames – its home since 1977.
“They had a seat [lead] on us off the start because the water was really rough, but as soon as we settled onto our pace we just kept moving away and we were really confident we could keep moving,” said Scheske, 20, a former Great Britain junior international.
“I didn’t think about what it would feel like after the race – I really just wanted to get the result – but it feels amazing to have the result.”
Next year the women’s race will share same course between Putney and Mortlake on the same day as the men’s race, and share TV coverage watched by five million viewers. The BBC announced this week an extension to their contract, covering both races until 2021.
Scheske added: “It’s fantastic that we’ve got the last win here at Henley and that’s a great confidence boost heading into next year. I’m excited to start the training for that.”
