Rio 2016 round-up: Two silver medals, Mikel and Vibe clash, Bees fan wins gold
West London claimed its first two medals of the Rio Olympics on a busy sixth day of competition, which also saw Justin Rose, Sir Bradley Wiggins and Rajiv Ouseph – plus Chelsea’s John Mikel Obi and Brentford’s Lasse Vibe – all in action…
Harrow-born Richard Hounslow won his second consecutive Olympic silver medal on Thursday, partnering David Florence in the canoe slalom C2.
Repeating their finish from London 2012, they clocked a time of 102.01 seconds, 0.43 seconds behind gold medallists Ladislav and Peter Skantar from Slovakia.
Putney’s Tom Bibby and Harlequins’ Ollie Lindsay-Hague also came second as part of the Team GB rugby sevens squad – but they were not so close to winning gold, as they were swept aside by Fiji in a one-sided final, 43-7.
However, there was a vague west London connection to the victors – Fiji’s English-born coach Ben Ryan is a Brentford FC fan.
Congratulations to Bees fan @benjaminryan and #Fiji7s on their first ever gold medal tonight! #Rio2016

Golf – Rose makes Olympic history
Putney resident Justin Rose hit the first-ever Olympic Games hole-in-one as golf made its debut.
Rose’s achievement came on the fourth hole as he finished his round on four-under, four shots behind the leader.
Cycling – Wiggins close to world record
Sir Bradley Wiggins and his Great Britain teammates came within three-tenths of a second of breaking their own world record in the men’s team pursuit.
Ed Clancy, Steven Burke, Owain Doull and Maida Vale-raised Wiggins clocked 3:51.943, the fastest time in qualifying, and will face New Zealand in Friday’s semi-final.
Rowing – Collins comes in fifth
Twickenham’s John Collins and his double sculls partner Jonathan Walton found the going tough in their final.
Collins and Walton came home in fifth, 11 seconds behind Croatia’s Martin and Valent Sinkovic, a creditable result given they had to go through the repechage after finishing fourth in their heat.
Football – Mikel and Vibe to meet
Chelsea’s John Mikel Obi and Brentford striker Lasse Vibe will go head-to-head in the quarter-finals as captains of their respective nations.
Both players were on the losing side in their final group-stage games, as Mikel’s Nigeria were beaten by Colombia and Vibe’s Denmark were thrashed by Brazil. However, both have qualified and will meet on Saturday at 8pm BST.
Badminton – Ouseph off and running
Feltham’s Rajiv Ouseph got his Olympic Games campaign under way with a victory over Petr Koukal of the Czech Republic.
Ouseph came through a comfortable 21-14 21-18 winner over the world number 81. Click here for a full report.
