Rio 2016 round-up: Richmond rugby heartbreak, Chelsea and Brentford stars’ joy, Zoe makes history

Olympics2

The Richmond Women trio of Alice Richardson, Joanne Watmore and Claire Allan suffered heartbreak as they missed out on a medal in the rugby sevens.

Having romped through their group and Sunday’s quarter-final, Great Britain were looking good for a tilt at gold when they led New Zealand 7-5 in the first half of their semi.

However, they trailed 15-7 by half-time and conceded a further two tries in the second half, leaving them to fight it out for bronze with Canada.

Great Britain had beaten the Canadians 22-0 in the group stage, but found themselves 26-5 down at the break and ended up losing 33-10, to finish fourth.

Football: Mikel and Vibe joy

Chelsea’s John Mikel Obi and Brentford’s Lasse Vibe both captained their countries to victory in second group-stage games late on Sunday.

A 1-0 victory for Mikel’s Nigeria, over Sweden, puts them through to the quarter-finals, following an earlier 5-4 victory against Japan.

Vibe helped Denmark beat South Africa 1-0 and they top Group A after a previous draw with Iraq. However, defeat against Brazil in their final group game could leave them vulnerable to exit, if Iraq defeat South Africa.

Rowing: De Toledo makes history, Hill guides men to final

zoeZoe De Toledo (left) guided the Great Britain women’s eight into Saturday’s final with a barnstorming finish to their heat.

With the race neck-and-neck, the Maida Vale-raised cox made her move with 750m to go and her crew ended up winning by three quarters of a length, the first time in Olympic history a GB women’s eight has made the final without going through the repechage first.

Phelan Hill, from Putney, led the men’s eight into the final with a comfortable victory, ahead of the Netherlands.

Meanwhile, in the men’s double sculls repechage, held over from Sunday, Twickenham’s John Collins, together with Jonathan Walton, took control of their race at the halfway stage to ease into the semi-finals.

Canoe slalom: Hounslow’s solid start

Harrow-born Richard Hounslow and David Florence – silver medallists at London 2012 – began their bid to go one better in the C-2 by recording the third-best score of the preliminary heats. Their semi-final – and potential final – is on Thursday.
