Rio 2016 round-up: McKenzie’s tearful exit, mixed fortunes for rowers, women’s rugby joy

Queen’s Park-born judoka Ashley McKenzie made a tearful exit at the Olympic Games after defeat by world champion Yeldov Smetov.

Commonwealth Games champion McKenzie was given a bye through to the second round, where he came through with ease against Turkey’s Bekir Ozlu.

But Kazakh Smetov – the world number four – proved a step too far as he was beaten by a single yuko point.

Elsewhere in Rio, Putney’s Mark Aldred was part of the men’s lightweight four boat which qualified for Tuesday’s semi-finals.

They were beaten into second in their heat by Denmark but comfortably held off challenges from Greece and Germany.

Twickenham’s John Collins will have to go through Sunday’s repechage after he and Jonathan Walton were edged out into fourth in the heats of the men’s double sculls.

There was local representation in the Great Britain side who won both their matches in the women’s rugby sevens.

Joanne Watmore and Alice Richardson, of Richmond Women, started both the 29-3 win over hosts Brazil and the 40-0 thrashing of Japan.

Watmore scored a try in both matches, while Richardson ran in 11 points against Japan.
