Although there was a weekend of international handball, with Team GB playing Greece, there was no break for the Ruislip Eagles, who won 27-23 away to Liverpool in the National Super 8 League.
Because of a busy calendar, the match in Greenbank could not be postponed.
The Eagles started the game with a new experimental defence that worked well.
Liverpool were able to score mainly in counter attack, after some mistakes made by the Eagles in set attacks.
But the Eagles were able to accelerate and led by a four-goal margin (15-11) at the break.
That advantage remained until the final whistle as they showed more experience and could rely on quality players to make the difference.
Lucas Carstens and Denis Werner each scored five times for the Eagles, who recorded their sixth win in six matches in 2013.
Coach Amer Altimimi said: “The victory was very important and we produced what was necessary to achieve this.
“The team looked pretty tired but still managed to show good phases. We can now turn our head to one of the biggest match of the season next weekend.”
Team: Stefan Bauer (goalkeeper) – Lucas Carstens (5 goals), Denis Werner (5), Michael Vitello (4), Hadrien Pollino (4), Marc Fayemi (3), Fredrik Charpentier (2), Bjoern Tessmann (2), Fabien Colette (1), Akos Weress (1)
Ruislip Eagles’ next game is against current league leaders London GD on Saturday at 5.30pm at Bethnal Green Academy, Gosset Street, London E2 6NW.
