Eagles’ Fayemi named coach of the year
Marc Fayemi says making Ruislip Eagles the top team in the country is his next target after being named coach of the year by the England Handball Association.
The Frenchman, 35, was honoured after guiding Eagles to third in the Super 8 table, just three points behind eventual winners Warrington Wolves, in his first season since retiring from playing to focus solely on coaching duties.
They also reached the semi-finals of the EHA Cup, but couldn’t get past Belgian side HC Vise in the EHF Challenge Cup.
Fayemi, who has been with the Eagles since 2005 and had been player-coach for several seasons, said: “This is a nice testimony to the fact we have done things right and an encouragement to keep putting effort in to help players enjoy the sport, help the talented ones fulfil their potential and render the handball league attractive and challenging in England.
“It is an unfinished business still as I would like to win the national league with the Eagles and establish competitive junior teams.
“I certainly won’t rest on my laurels. My coaching abilities will be tested. I like the challenge to continuously raise the standard of the teams I am involved with.”
David Meli, England Handball Association chief executive, praised Fayemi for his commitment to handball and called him a “great ambassador for the sport”.
He added: “Marc has made the men’s team a competitive and strong Super 8 team in recent seasons.
“He organises and shares in the delivery of coaching for junior players at a local club [Ealing Handball Club] with whom he has helped form a strategic partnership to help young players have a pathway for development.
“As well as running taster sessions at local schools to provide encouragement for them to progress into club handball, he has also coached borough teams at the London Youth Games every year since its inception in 2010.”
