Eagles celebrate win over London rivals
Ruislip Eagles are in buoyant mood after staging yet another late comeback, this time to beat London rivals – and defending champions – London GD 27-26 in the National Super 8 Handball League
Having beaten them at the Copper Box earlier in the season, Eagles were determined to be victorious again in what promised to be another classic.
London GD enjoyed a four-goal lead and worse followed for Ruislip when Tobias Stockfleth picked up a third two-minute suspension and then Marc Fayemi received a straight red card.
However, led by their captain Hannes Mazur, they came storming back.
Fabien Colette and Lucas Carstens scored three goals to level the score and set up a dramatic final four minutes.
Shooter Jozsef Csontos kept converting shots with stunning accuracy, finishing as the team’s top scorer with eight goals, while the Eagles’ outstanding goalkeeper Stefan Bauer produced several saves.
And with the teams all-square at 26-26 in the dying seconds, Eagles winger Kuba Brzozowski sealed the win with an exquisite finish.
‘March Madness’ goes on for the Eagles, with two difficult away games, against Olympic Catuvellauni on Sunday 9 March in the EHA Cup, and against Salford HC on Sunday 16 March in the Super 8 League.
Team: Stefan Bauer, Tibor Szerencse (goalkeepers) – Jozsef Csontos (8 goals), Hannes Mazur (5), Tobias Stockfleth (3), Lucas Carstens (3), Fabien Colette (3), Marc Fayemi (3), Kuba Brzozowski (2), Stephen Raducki, Oli Barton, Michael Vitello.
Team officials: Chris Powell, Yohann Lucas.
Meanwhile, Ruislip Eagles’ women’s team, who have performed brilliantly lately, were beaten 23-21 by London GD in Manja Koenig’s final game for the club.
