Ruislip Eagles coach Marc Fayemi praised the spirit of his side as they began 2015 with a victory to maintain their lead at the top of the men’s Super 8 table.
In their first match after the four-week Christmas break, the Eagles travelled to Bradford to take on Leeds Hornets.
Mark Hawkins and Jozsef Csontos were the first to fire with accurate long-range shooting and some fast moves saw Ruislip establish a comfortable six-goal lead at half-time, going 21-15 ahead.
The Hornets did reduce the arrears in the second half, making the most of the Eagles’ occasional profligacy, but the visitors did enough to secure a 35-32 win.
Fayemi said he was pleased his side had not fallen into the ‘January trap’ by making a slow start to the new year.
He added: “We all knew it would be a difficult first game after the four-week break but the players did show a good spirit on court and rallied when necessary to make sure we could grab the three points.”
The Eagles’ will be in action again on Sunday, taking on Thames Handball Club at Sporthouse Barking in the National English Cup.
