Groves’ world title clash in Sheffield confirmed

George Groves will face former champion Fedor Chudinov for the vacant WBA super-middleweight title at Sheffield United’s Bramall Lane ground on 27 May, it has been confirmed.

Hammersmith’s Groves, 29, will make his fourth attempt to become a world champion and the bout will be the chief support to the welterweight word title clash between Sheffield’s Kell Brook and American Errol Spence.

Groves was twice beaten by former champion Carl Froch when attempting to win the WBA and IBF belts and lost on points to WBC champion Badou Jack in Las Vegas in 2015.

The hard-hitting Chudinov, also 29, has won all but one of his 15 fights and the Russian was WBA champion before a points defeat against Felix Sturm last year.

Sturm later tested positive for a banned substance and vacated the title, citing an elbow injury.

“I’m excited to be challenging for the world title at Bramall Lane,” said Groves.

“Last year was a good year for me. I’m in a great position to capture the WBA title and push on from there.

“Fedor Chudinov is a good fighter – he proved that against Felix Sturm. But I honestly believe that I will have too much for him.

“It has always been my dream to become world champion, and now it’s my time and nothing will stand in my way.”
