Rajiv Ouseph beat Japan’s Takuma Ueda in his opening match at the Indonesia Open on Wednesday, to set up a clash with world number one Chen Long.
Feltham’s world number 29 overcame Ueda, who is ranked four places above him, 21-18 21-15 in Jakarta.
Ueda was in front for most of the first game, holding 12-6 and 17-12 leads, but Ouseph won nine straight points on his way to clinching it.
In the second game, Ueda again made the better start but Ouseph was always in touch and after coming back to level at 12-12, he powered away to wrap up the match.
Next in his sights is reigning world champion and London 2012 bronze medallist Chen, who is chasing his fourth title of the year.
The 26-year-old won the All-England Open in March and is undefeated against Ouseph in their five previous matches.
However, Ouseph did take both of the last two meetings – at the 2014 Hong Kong Open and the 2013 Denmark Open – to a deciding game.
