Wealdstone’s promotion hopes wrecked
Wealdstone 1 Concord Rangers 2 (After extra time)
Wealdstone’s promotion hopes were cruelly ended in a dramatic Ryman Premier play-off semi-final.
The Ruislip-based club were leading through top scorer Richard Jolly’s second-half opener when Leon Gordon netted a last-gasp equaliser to force extra time.
And Tony Stokes’ winner took Concord Rangers through to the final, where they will play Lowestoft.
It was rough on the Stones, who dominated much of the game and were twice denied by the woodwork before Jolly struck.
Alex Dyer sent an effort against the bar, as did Peter Dean as the home side continued to press.
They were rewarded for their efforts when marksman Jolly headed home from Lee Chappell’s free-kick.
That looked like being the only goal but when Gordon’s scuffed shot somehow ended up in the net, the visitors were handed a lifeline.
And worse followed for Wealdstone when Stokes scored from close range to condemn them to a second successive play-off failure.
