United boss Babb targets two signings

Hayes & Yeading United boss Phil Babb plans to add experience to his young squad with two new signings this week.

Babb is chasing Cambridge City striker Kelvin Bossman and says he also wants a midfielder who has played at a higher level.

United are currently missing skipper Luke Williams and key midfielders Louis Soares and Kameron English through injury and were forced to name a bench full of untried teenagers in their defeat to Eastbourne Borough on Monday.

Bossman, 23, who played for Ghana in the Under-17 World Cup in 2007, would add Conference South knowhow to United’s attack, having previously turned out for Basingstoke, Maidenhead and Havant & Waterlooville.

He joined Cambridge City earlier this month on a non-contract basis and Babb is keen to bring him in.

“I know Kelvin well. He’s a striker who can play on the right as well and brings a little bit of physicality,” Babb told West London Sport.

“He’s experienced, even though he’s only 23, and he’s someone who will complement Jake Reid very well.”

Babb revealed he is also after a midfielder who “has played at this level and knows how to grind results out.”

However, the former Liverpool defender does not want a repeat of the revolving door policy which blighted United last season.

Babb said: “[First-team coach] Tristan [Lewis] was telling me they had about 50 or 60 lads in last season. I don’t want that.

“I’m trying to build a team so that we’ve got that small squad mentality where they’re going to fight for each other.”
