Stones sign Smith as cover for Jolly
Wealdstone have snapped up Leon Smith from Wingate & Finchley as cover for Richard Jolly.
Stones boss Gordon Bartlett has been hunting for a striker to replace leading scorer Jolly, who is set to miss the next three weeks because he is on honeymoon.
Smith, who has joined on a month’s loan, hit 21 goals for Wingate last season.
However, he has just six league goals to his name this season – and Bartlett is hoping a change of scenery will help him recapture last term’s form.
Bartlett told West London Sport: “He’s not been playing much at Wingate but we know what he’s capable of.
“It’s a fresh challenge for him and if he rises to it then it could be good for all parties. He was on fire last year.”
Bartlett is still hoping to add to his squad ahead of a punishing run of nine matches over the next four weeks.
Midfielder Tommy Brewer is back after a loan spell at Carshalton but Bartlett is in the market for another centre-back after Aaron Tumwa returned to parent club Watford.
The Stones boss added: “We’ve got players who could play there but it’s not their natural position. It’d be putting square pegs in round holes.
“I’ve been speaking to players and clubs but for many reasons all we’ve done is drawn a blank.”
