Wealdstone pulled off the shock of the FA Trophy quarter-finals by beating Cambridge United 2-1 at the Abbey Stadium to stay on course for a trip to Wembley.
The Ryman League side were the lowest-ranked team left in the competition and despite some fine wins over Barrow and Dartford in previous rounds, were still very much the underdogs against a team of full-time professionals from the Blue Square Bet Premier – two divisions above them.
The Stones showed few nerves in the opening exchanges and got off to a superb start when top scorer Richard Jolly gave them the lead after only five minutes.
The former Hayes player then scored his 33rd goal of the season to put the visitors into a commanding 2-0 lead midway through the second half.
James Jennings pulled one back almost immediately for the U’s but an equaliser did not materialise as Gordon Bartlett’s men sensationally booked a place in Monday’s semi-final draw alongside Luton Town, Newport County and York City.
