Joy as Wealdstone clinch promotion

Wealdstone have sealed promotion to the Conference South with a 1-0 victory at Margate.

Charlie Penny netted an 83rd-minute winner for the Ruislip-based club in front of nearly 200 Stones fans.

In the end the result was academic, as Hampton & Richmond’s 4-3 win against third-placed Bognor Regis meant Wealdstone would have been crowned Ryman League champions in any case.

Beaten in the play-offs in the last two years, and in their 19th season under long-serving manager Gordon Bartlett, their triumph finally ends a long wait for the club, who were last part of the Conference in 1988.
