Errors cost Wealdstone in FA Trophy

Newport County 3-1 Wealdstone

Mistakes by Jonathan North and Scott McCubbin saw Wealdstone slip to defeat as their hopes of reaching Wembley received a setback.

A bumper crowd of 2,209 at the Newport Stadium for this FA Trophy semi-final first leg watched as goalkeeper North failed to deal with a cross, allowing former Hayes & Yeading striker Elliott Buchanan to give the Welsh side an early advantage.

With less than a quarter of the game played, Nat Jarvis doubled the hosts’ lead when he smashed home after Gary Warren’s header hit the bar.

The Stones upped their game after the break and swiftly reduced the deficit when top scorer Richard Jolly netted his 35th of the season.

With Wealdstone looking the stronger, midfielder McCubbin failed to clear, leaving substitute Darryl Knights to restore County’s two-goal cushion with 12 minutes to go.

Gordon Bartlett’s side failed to cut the gap any further in the remaining time and now have it all to do in next Saturday’s second leg at Grosvenor Vale.
