Hayes & Yeading 3 Alfreton 1
Goalkeeper Steven Arnold saved two penalties as Hayes & Yeading opened their Conference campaign with a deserved victory.
Playing their first league match at Woking’s Kingfield Stadium – their home until a new ground is built on the site of The Warren – United were the better side throughout.
They went ahead through Matt McClure’s close-range shot, before Arnold kept out Paul Clayton’s spot-kick.
Former QPR striker Richard Pacquette doubled the lead by shooting into the far corner, and Arnold then saved another penalty – this time from Josh Law – to keep his team in the driving seat.
Nathan Arnold crossed for Jamie Mullan to pull one back for promoted Alfreton, but Ryan Crockford’s 25-yarder ensured Nas Bashir’s reign as United boss started with a win.
