Weather wrecks second day at Lord’s
Close, day two: Warwickshire 362-8 dec lead Middlesex 0-0 by 362 runs
Only seven overs were possible as persistent rain wiped out most of the second day between Middlesex and Warwickshire at Lord’s.
After several inspections and an early lunch and tea, the umpires finally gave the all clear for play to start at 5.30pm.
Rikki Clarke, who had been on 93 overnight, failed to reach his century as he scored just a single run from 15 balls before being caught by sub fielder Ollie Rayner at slip off Toby Roland-Jones.
Tim Murtagh removed Jeetan Patel but Keith Barker remained unbeaten, moving to 72 not out when Warwickshire chose to declare, having added 24 to their score.
However, their hopes of taking a Middlesex wicket or two in the seven overs that remained were dashed amid confusing scenes.
The Warwickshire players came on to the field for what they assumed would be the start of the home side’s reply, but the Middlesex openers stayed in the pavilion.
However the umpires checked the light when they got to the middle and then took the fielders back off and play was abandoned for the day.
