Voges to replace Rogers at Middlesex

Adam Voges will be Middlesex’s four-day captain and overseas player next year, replacing Chris Rogers.

The 35-year-old stood in for Rogers while he played in the 2013 Ashes series and has now signed a one-year deal to play in all forms of cricket.

Rogers is expected to be touring England with Australia again next year, so Middlesex have brought back his compatriot to cover his absence.

Voges, who in the past 12 months has captained Western Australia to domestic T20 and 50-over titles and the final of the Sheffield Shield, said he was honoured to become Middlesex’s four-day captain.

He said: “My aim for 2015 is to help lead the team towards success in all three formats of the game and I strongly believe we have a squad capable of doing that.”

In the four County Championship matches he played in 2013, Voges scored 383 runs at an average of just under 55.

Middlesex managing director of cricket Angus Fraser said: “During the time he previously spent with us he made an extremely positive impression both on and off the pitch.

“Adam is a fine player, as he is showing in Australian domestic cricket, and a top man.

“The absence of Chris Rogers, who we believe will be touring England with Australia in 2015, has left a major hole to fill and we believe, in Adam, we have a more than capable replacement.”

Meanwhile, batsman Nick Gubbins has signed a new three-year deal with the club.

The 20-year-old, from Richmond, made his Middlesex debut in 2014 and hit three half centuries in four County Championship matches, including 95 against Somerset.

His university commitments, which limited is involvement with Middlesex, are likely to finish by March, making him available for the entire 2015 season.
