The last three winners of The Hundred
As the cricketing world gears up for the fourth season of The Hundred, anticipation is building for another thrilling summer of innovative and fast-paced cricket.
The competition, which has rapidly gained popularity since its inception, has seen three distinct champions in its first three editions.
With the Oval Invincibles favourites in The Hundred 2024 odds, let’s take a look back at the journey of these champions who etched their names in the history of The Hundred.
2021: Southern Brave – The inaugural champions
The inaugural edition of The Hundred in 2021 saw Southern Brave claim the prestigious title. Under the astute leadership of captain James Vince and the strategic guidance of coach Mahela Jayawardene, the Brave showcased a blend of tactical prowess and on-field brilliance.
Finishing second in the group stages, with five wins, two losses, and one no result, they demonstrated consistency and resilience.
The Brave’s path to glory was marked by a standout performance in the eliminator against Trent Rockets. Having lost to the Rockets earlier in the competition, the Brave turned the tables by bowling them out for a mere 96 runs and chasing down the target with seven wickets in hand. This victory propelled them into the final at the iconic Lord’s.
In the final, Southern Brave faced the Birmingham Phoenix, the table-toppers. The Brave delivered a commanding performance, winning by 32 runs and securing their place as the first-ever champions of The Hundred.
Their success was a testament to their balanced squad and the inspirational leadership of Vince.
2022: Trent Rockets – Redemption and triumph
Trent Rockets, who had fallen short in the eliminator in 2021, returned with a vengeance in 2022. Under the experienced eyes of coach Andy Flower, the Rockets topped the group stage with six wins and two losses, showcasing their dominance throughout the season.
Their direct entry into the final was well-deserved, and they faced the Manchester Originals, who had triumphed over London Spirit in the eliminator. The final turned out to be a nail-biting affair. The Rockets, chasing a competitive total of 120, secured a dramatic victory by two wickets with just two balls to spare.
This win marked a significant turnaround from their disappointment last year and crowned them the champions of The Hundred 2022.
2023: Oval Invincibles – Capital glory
The third edition of The Hundred saw the Oval Invincibles take centre stage. While the women’s team had already set a high standard with back-to-back titles, the men’s team followed suit in 2023. Captained by a dynamic leader in Sam Billings and showcasing a cohesive team effort, the Invincibles topped the standings with six wins, one draw, and one defeat.
In the final, they faced the Manchester Originals, who were making their second consecutive appearance. The Invincibles, playing with a blend of flair and strategy, triumphed by 14 runs. This victory ensured that the men’s title remained in London for the first time, adding to the prestige of the capital’s cricketing prowess.
