Close, day one: Middlesex 320-3 v Sussex
Middlesex 3pts, Sussex 1pt
Chris Rogers hit an unbeaten century on an excellent first day for Middlesex at Lord’s.
The opener was fortunate to be dropped on three and 102 before progressing to 161 not out; 100 coming during the first wicket with Sam Robson, who was caught lbw by Will Beer for 54.
Beer (2-55) also removed Joe Denly before Neil Dexter’s 62 not out helped the home side add 123.
Leaders Sussex should have had an early breakthrough when Steve Magoffin found the edge of Rogers’ bat, but Michael Yardy failed to take the catch at slip.
After Robson departed to the final ball before lunch, Sussex enjoyed a decent spell with Denly (11) and Adam London (18) falling to Beer and Chris Nash respectively.
But Rogers was helped by another mistake, this time when Chris Jordan put down a diving catch off Beer, and the Australian’s second Championship hundred of the summer leaves his team in a strong position.
