Rain frustrates Middlesex at Trent Bridge

Close, day one: Nottinghamshire 132-1 v Middlesex

Middlesex took a single wicket as play was threadbare on the first day against Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge.

Only 42 overs of cricket were managed before the elements spoiled the start of Middlesex’s second away game of the season.

Notts won the toss and elected to bat, but they were 0-1 in just the second over when England seamer Steve Finn bowled opener Neil Edwards for a golden duck.

Former England twenty20 batsman Michael Lumb then took to the crease and joined international prospect Alex Hales.

The pair settled well and made a 50 partnership within 15 overs, thanks mostly to Hales.

And they extended an excellent partnership to 109-1 at lunch, with Lumb at 38 and Hales on 68.

Middlesex bowlers Finn and Tim Murtagh kept things tight in the second session on a good pitch, halting the Notts advance at 132-1 when rain first arrived just before 3pm.

Play was due to recommence at 3.30pm but a restart was not possible with a second bout of poor weather forcing the covers back on.

The first day of four was eventually abandoned just after 5pm.
