Middlesex never fully recovered from early batting woes and were comprehensively defeated in the T20 Blast at Richmond by a rampant Glamorgan.

The visitors, who had won six of their seven completed matches coming into this one, were on course for victory after eight overs of Middlesex’s innings, as they were reduced to 39-5.

Eoin Morgan and Ryan Higgins (pictured) both made fifties but 144-8 never looked enough and Glamorgan knocked off the runs for the loss of one wicket with 21 balls to spare.

Australian Shaun Tait did the initial damage, removing Dawid Malan and Paul Stirling in the second over, and Middlesex’s attempts to rebuild were cut short by three wickets in eight balls, two to Timm van der Guyten.

Morgan, fresh from leading England to victory over Sri Lanka this week, eschewed his usual attacking game to rebuild with rookie Higgins.

With five overs and a ball left, Middlesex were 76-5 when Morgan signalled the charge, clubbing Graeme Wagg over mid-wicket for six, while the next over went for 19.

When Morgan was caught by Aneurin Donald for 58, Higgins took up the mantle, sending Wagg’s next over for 20 as the Zimbabwean-born batsman reached the first 50 of his career.

Middlesex needed early wickets but instead Mark Wallace and David Lloyd plundered 125 runs in 15 overs, before the latter fell for 49 to Nathan Sowter.

Glamorgan never looked back, Colin Ingram finishing the match with three successive sixes off Ollie Rayner.
