Middlesex return to the top after draw

Middlesex 260 & 152-5 drew with Warwickshire 342 & 187
(Middlesex 10 pts, Warwickshire 11 pts)

Toby Roland-Jones claimed four wickets and Joe Burns scored 79 as Middlesex drew with Warwickshire to go back on top of Division One.

There were briefly hopes of a Middlesex victory as the visitors lost five wickets for 22 runs, sparked by Jonathan Trott’s run out.

Varun Chopra top scored with 73 but he also fell in the collapse, though Jeetan Patel’s 27 late on dragged Warwickshire up to 187.

Roland-Jones ended with 4-51, while James Harris took 3-49 and Steven Finn chipped in with the other two.

Middlesex were set 270 to win in 54 overs but an unpredictable pitch made it difficult to score quickly – Burns (72) and Sam Robson (29) put on an opening stand of 80 but that came in 26 overs.

Nick Compton, Eoin Morgan and James Franklin all fell cheaply, leaving Neil Dexter and John Simpson the task of securing the draw.

It leaves Middlesex four points ahead of Durham, with Warwickshire 14 points adrift in third.
