Middlesex complete victory over Sussex

Middlesex 496 & 44-0 beat Sussex 229 & 310 by 10 wickets
(Sussex 2 pts, Middlesex 24 pts)

Middlesex needed just 80 minutes to wrap up victory at Hove and earn their first County Championship win since May.

Corey Collymore and Tim Murtagh removed the final four Sussex batsmen inside the first nine overs of the day, with Luke Wright the last to fall for 161.

Openers Sam Robson (18 not out) and Dawid Malan (19 not out) chased down the 44 required to complete the 10-wicket win and inflict Sussex’s first Championship defeat of the season.

After taking maximum bonus points, Middlesex move up to fourth in Division One and move to within 24 points of new leaders Yorkshire.

Sussex began the final day just 21 ahead with four second innings wickets in hand but Middlesex wasted little time in ending their resistance.

Murtagh removed Chris Jordan with his first delivery and Collymore had Steve Magoffin caught behind without scoring in the next over.

Joe Anyon added 15 with Wright before the tail-ender also edged Murtagh to wicket-keeper John Simpson as Middlesex continued to bowl well.

Five balls later and Wright’s spectacular knock of 161 came to an end as he was caught by Neil Dexter off Collymore, as Sussex were all out for 310.

The late-order collapse ensured Middlesex’s victory target was just 44 and Sussex provided little threat to Robson and Malan.

The pair hit five boundaries between them, with Malan’s single off Michael Yardy’s bowling completing the job at just after 12.20pm.
