Balbirnie exits Middlesex after injury blow

Middlesex have agreed to release batsman Andrew Balbirnie after he was ruled out of the rest of the 2016 season.

Balbirnie, 25, a graduate of the club’s academy, had to have surgery in April to correct an ongoing hip condition.

The lengthy recuperation period meant the Ireland international would not play again this year, by which time his current contract with Middlesex would have expired.

Both parties have agreed an amicable agreement to terminate Balbirnie’s deal.

He made 12 appearances for the club, including five T20 matches last season. He also scored 41 against Essex in the Royal London One-Day Cup.

Angus Fraser, Middlesex’s managing director, said: “It’s always extremely sad to release a young cricketer, especially when they are as likeable and as committed to the game as Andrew.

“He is expected to make a full recovery from his operation, is a very good cricketer, and everyone at the club wishes him well for the future.”
