Middlesex paceman Mitchell McClenaghan has been ruled out of the rest of the T20 Blast with injury.
The New Zealander complained of pain in his left hip during the match against Essex at Chelmsford on 10 June, which worsened when he bowled against Surrey a week later.
Scans have revealed a stress fracture to his pelvis, an injury which requires a minimum of six weeks’ rest.
Middlesex’s managing director of cricket Angus Fraser hinted the club may replace McClenaghan from within their own ranks, rather than with another overseas player.
He said: “Losing Mitchell is a big blow for us. He is an outstanding white ball bowler who brings variety, skill and nous to any side he plays for.
“Finding a replacement of similar quality at such short notice is proving extremely difficult.
“A number of international tours are scheduled in July and August and the Caribbean Premier League is about to start.
“Mitchell will undoubtedly be missed but his absence gives opportunities to other bowlers on our staff.
“Mitchell’s misfortune could well give them the stage on which they can show people what they are capable of producing.”
Middlesex are already without fast bowler Tom Helm, who will miss the rest of the season through injury.
