Nick Compton could return to competitive cricket on Tuesday after ending his seven-week sabbatical.
The 33-year-old announced in June he was taking break from the game after struggling for runs this season, both for Middlesex and England.
But he has been named in Middlesex’s 16-man squad ahead of their Royal London One-Day Cup match with Surrey at Lord’s.
Although he has played some second XI cricket, it would be his first senior game since being dismissed for 19 in England’s third Test against Sri Lanka on 11 June.
He made just 51 runs in five innings during that series and averages just 20 in his four matches for Middlesex in county cricket this season.
