Middlesex all-rounder Gareth Berg will miss the rest of the season after learning of a muscle tear in his shoulder.
The 33-year-old will undergo surgery on the injury in the coming weeks before a lengthy recuperation period which means he won’t play again this year.
Berg suffered discomfort after bowling in the opening County Championship game of the season against Nottinghamshire in April and didn’t bat in the 10-wicket win.
An infected abscess in his shoulder was discovered, and Berg has missed the last seven weeks of action while on an intensive course of antibiotics.
When that cleared up, further analysis showed up a tear which will rule him out for the rest of the 2014 campaign.
Middlesex managing director of cricket Angus Fraser said: “This is obviously extremely disappointing news for Gareth and Middlesex. He is an extremely important player in that he gives the team quality and balance.
“Gareth’s presence has and will continue to be missed by the team and we all wish him a speedy and full recovery.”
