Fulham kept the heat on second-placed Cardiff thanks to two more goals from Aleksandar Mitrovic and another from Tom Cairney.

On-loan Newcastle striker Mitrovic added his fourth and fifth strikes in four games as the Whites raced into a two-goal half-time lead.

Cairney then finished off a swift breakaway in the second half as the play-off-chasing Blades pushed hard to get back in the game, but instead they allowed the hosts a third successive Championship victory.

Fulham’s formidable run shows no sign of derailing and they worked hard for their openings in the first half against a well-organised side fresh from an away win at Reading at the weekend.

Cairney produced the superb breakthrough pass for the opening goal, playing in Ryan Fredericks on the right to cross low for Mitrovic to turn home via the crossbar on 33 minutes.

The Serbian then produced a deft touch to find his second goal from Stefan Johansen’s whipped cross, and he could have had a hat-trick before the break when he side-footed just inches over the crossbar.

Cairney curled home the third inside the far post after an hour of play and Mitrovic went close again with a sliced effort wide of the far post before he was subbed off late in the game.
