Sacked Jol is replaced by Meulensteen

Martin Jol has been sacked as Fulham manager, with head coach Rene Meulensteen taking charge with immediate effect.

Jol has paid the price for the Whites’ dismal results this season – their 3-0 loss at West Ham on Saturday was their fifth consecutive defeat.

He had been heavily criticised by disgruntled Fulham fans, who again chanted for his dismissal during the game at Upton Park.

When asked afterwards if he was confident he would still be at the helm for Wednesday’s match against his former club Tottenham, he said: “It’s out of my hands.”

Meulensteen, who previously worked under Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United, recently arrived at Craven Cottage and had been touted as a possible replacement for the under-pressure Jol.

“Rene Meulensteen was brought to Fulham to assist Martin and today was offered the challenge and opportunity to step in for Martin,” said club owner Shahid Khan.

“I thank Rene for accepting and now we move forward. I have great confidence in Rene and high expectations for our squad to respond.”

Meulensteen said: “I appreciate the faith Mr Khan has put in me and will do my very best to honour his trust. We aim to get Fulham back on track, starting on Wednesday night.”
