Magath vows to ‘look after’ youngsters
Fulham manager Felix Magath vowed to keep putting his faith in the club’s youngsters after Chris David’s late goal meant an awful season at least ended on a high note.
David’s fine strike – his first goal for the Whites – secured a 2-2 draw at home to Crystal Palace after teenage forward Cauley Woodrow had also opened his Fulham account.
Determined to rebuild after relegation from the Premier League, Magath believes the spirited second-half display at Craven Cottage was a sign of things to come.
The German said: “For us this was the start of the new season. We have work to do and we will do it.
“We want to rely on younger players, not older players. I will take care of the young players.
“We have a good youth academy but in the last few years they have not played much and that will change. I will bring them in to Fulham.”
Woodrow brought Fulham level with an emphatic finish on the hour mark but when Dwight Gayle scored his second goal of the match for Palace, the Eagles looked to be heading for victory.
But David salvaged a point with a fierce drive that bounced in after hitting the underside of the bar.
“I felt sorry for my players being behind so was very glad Chris David scored in the last minute and made it a better result for us,” Magath said.
“I think the goal will give our supporters hope that we can do better.”
