Jol eyes cup boost against Everton

Fulham manager Martin Jol says Tuesday’s Capital One Cup tie against Everton is a great chance for his struggling side to return to winning ways.

The Whites have won just one of their first five Premier League fixtures and needed penalties to beat Burton Albion in the previous round.

Jol remained positive despite losing at Chelsea on Saturday but admits his team badly need a victory to ease the tension.

“The match [against Everton] is good for the spirit of the team if we can get back to winning games,” said Jol.

“We played three away matches in our first five and it wasn’t easy. We need a win.

“We would like to have got a result against Arsenal especially, so the West Brom game was very important and it was a draw.”

Fulham striker Dimitar Berbatov could be available after a hamstring problem kept him out of the Chelsea game, while Aaron Hughes is available again following a thigh injury.

Winger Bryan Ruiz may also be in contention after scans on an ankle injury revealed the problem is not as bad as first feared.

“If we’d have played like we did in the first 15 minutes against Chelsea [in every game this season] then we’d have done something,” Jol added.

“We did ever so well in the first half – Chelsea were worried and it was disappointing not to have exploited that. We have to have more conviction.”
