Jol thinks Hughes has a future at Fulham

Fulham manager Martin Jol believes Aaron Hughes has a future at Craven Cottage despite the defender losing his place.

Hughes, one of the club’s longest-serving players, signed a new contract last September but has not made a first-team appearance since January.

Jol accepts there is a chance the Northern Ireland international, 33, may look to move on, but he does expect Hughes to still be at the club next season.

“It depends on the player as well. I’ve got one or two players who tell me almost every week that they need to play,” said Jol.

“If they need to play and you’re not playing here then you probably think about going to another club.

“But that is something for the end of the season – and I don’t think Aaron will be one of them.”

Hughes has made over 200 appearances for Fulham since joining from Aston Villa in June 2007.

The Whites boss added: “Aaron is real good Fulham player. He works hard, so he is waiting for his chance.

“He is unbelievably fit – fitter than all my other players – and his contract was extended.

“The only thing was Philippe Senderos started to play and then we had a very good run so he [Senderos] deserved his place.

“There were long spells that Aaron was playing because he did well, and Senderos was probably not pleased.

“He had to wait for his chance as well and that is how it works.”
