Fulham need ‘game-savers’ – Grant

Caretaker boss Peter Grant says the next Fulham manager will have to bring more structure to the team’s cavalier approach.

Grant has taken charge of the team for two games following Kit Symons’ dismissal as manager on 8 November, the latest being the 1-1 draw with Preston on Saturday.

Grant says he is happy to continue in the role until a new man is found, and outlined the areas that need improving.

He said: “We’ve scored a lot of goals, the most in the division. But they’ve got to show that quality without the ball. We’ve got to be organised at all times.

“I’m watching certain games and it looks as if we’re playing two at the back, because everybody wants to go forward.

“The manager who comes in here has got a lot of matchwinners. He’s got to get match-savers as well. He has to give them that little bit of guidance, that little bit of structure.”

Grant was pleased that a tactical switch at half-time, matching up Preston’s 3-5-2, paid off with an improved second-half display, culminating in Ross McCormack’s free-kick that earned the Whites a point.

He added: “Playing the three [at the back] really suited us in the second half, we’re just disappointed in that final area of the pitch where we didn’t get the shots away.”
