Milner penalty nudges Fulham closer to relegation

Fulham 1 Liverpool 2

A late penalty by James Milner condemned Fulham to a seventh consecutive defeat and nudged them closer to relegation back to the Championship.

Ryan Babel scored against his former club to haul the Whites level on 74 minutes, cancelling out Sadio Mane’s first-half goal.

Babel tapped into an empty net after pouncing on Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk’s woeful back-header to keeper Alisson.

However, title-chasing Liverpool regained the lead seven minutes later.

Keeper Sergio Rico was unable to hold Mohamed Salah’s shot and was adjudged to have fouled Mane as he attempted to prevent him scoring from the rebound.

Milner made no mistake from the spot, taking Liverpool back to the top of the table.

Mane’s 26th-minute goal put the visitors ahead at Craven Cottage.

The recalled Timothy Fosu-Mensah stood off Mane and the Senegalese international exchanged passes with Roberto Firmino before firing past Rico.

Fulham, next to bottom of the Premier League, have at least shown heart since Scott Parker took caretaker charge following the sacking of Claudio Ranieri.

They put Liverpool under second-half pressure, with Floyd Ayite having a goal disallowed and Alisson producing a fine save to deny André-Frank Zambo Anguissa before Babel equalised with his second goal since arriving in January.

Fulham: Rico, Fosu-Mensah (Christie 73), Chambers, Ream, Bryan, Seri (Sessegnon 63), Anguissa, Babel, Cairney (Kebano 82), Ayite, Mitrovic.
Subs not used: Fabri, Odoi, McDonald, Vietto.
