Fulham are in discussions with Steve Clarke after making an approach to Reading.
The 52-year-old former Chelsea man was appointed as Reading manager only 11 months ago but could be set for a return to west London as Kit Symons’ successor.
Fulham, who sacked Symons earlier this month, are keen to appoint head coach before the weekend and have been in talks with ex-Leicester manager Nigel Pearson.
They moved for Scotsman Clarke after negotiations with Pearson stalled.
Clarke spent 11 years as a Chelsea player and later served the club as a coach and assistant manager.
He had an 18-month spell as West Brom manager and has also been assistant boss at Liverpool, Newcastle and West Ham.
