Fulham sign Riether as Lewington leaves

Fulham have confirmed the signing of defender Sascha Riether from German club Cologne.

The 29-year-old right-back has arrived on a season-long loan with a view to then completing a permanent move to Craven Cottage.

Meanwhile, club stalwart Ray Lewington has left his job as coach after signing a four-year contract as England manager Roy Hodgson’s assistant.

Lewington, who has served Fulham as a player, coach and manager, worked alongside former Whites boss Hodgson at Euro 2012.

“I’m delighted to be joining Roy’s England coaching staff permanently,” Lewington said.

“I really enjoyed the experience at the Euros this summer and am looking forward to spending more time with the squad as we look to qualify for the World Cup in Brazil.

“I would like to thank everyone at Fulham Football Club for such a wonderful time since I joined as a player in 1980. This is a very special club full of great people dedicated to taking it forward.”

Riether, who has been cappped twice by Germany, started his career with Frieburg and then had a four-year spell at Wolfsburg before joining Cologne in 2010.

He made his debut for Germany against Denmark that year and later played in a Euro 2012 qualifier against Azerbaijan.
