Boss Jol savours ‘one of the best goals’
Fulham boss Martin Jol described Pajtim Kasami’s amazing strike against Crystal Palace as one of the best goals ever scored.
The Whites stormed to a 4-1 victory but were behind when Kasami drifted across to the right-hand edge of the penalty area and cushioned a high ball on his chest before sending a brilliant volley into the far corner.
Kasami’s moment of magic will inevitably be compared with Marco van Basten’s famous volley for Holland in the final of the 1988 European Championships.
And Dutchman Jol declared: “It was 30 or 40 yards because Kasami plays on the left and turned up on the right. I don’t think he’ll score a better goal than that. It was one of the goals of the season.
“Van Basten’s was probably the best volley in the history of football, although it was one touch.
“This was a sprint too and I think without stretching my imagination that it was one of the best goals.”
After coming under increasing pressure during a recent five-match run without a win, Jol has been boosted by back-to-back victories.
And club owner Shahid Khan was at Selhurst Park to see Fulham clinch their second away triumph of the season.
“He was very pleased and the last time I saw him he was happy too. He looks a happy man and is always satisfied,” said Jol.
“I’m very satisfied, especially with the way we did it. The first goal was sickening but we came back and showed a lot of resilience.
“I think we played better than Crystal Palace and that is what you want – to go out and control the game.
“We took a bit of a risk playing with Berbatov, Bent, Ruiz and Kasami and to have a 4-1 result – one of the best results of recent years – is very pleasing.
“We’ve got some very good players but we’ve got to play as a team. In the Premier League it’s not always easy to get the balance but over the last year our away results have not been as bad as people think.”
Jol added that Brede Hangeland was taken off at half-time because of an injury.
The defender, who was at fault for Palace’s early goal, has had a problem with his sciatic nerve.
