Aston Villa 1 Fulham 0
Andreas Weimann’s 90th-minute winner denied Fulham a point and eased the pressure on Aston Villa boss Alex McLeish.
Weimann followed up after Craig Gardner’s shot from the edge of the area was saved by Mark Schwarzer, first heading against the Whites keeper before bundling home at the second attempt.
Fulham spent much of the game absorbing pressure but almost took the lead in the second half when Damien Duff shot against the post after being played in by John Arne Riise.
Villa had earlier been denied by the woodwork themselves when Marc Albrighton’s 20-yard effort came back off the bar.
In the first half, Albrighton’s header was saved by Schwarzer, who saw a long-range effort from Stiliyan Petrov fly over.
At the other end, Fulham striker Andrew Johnson fired over as the visitors looked to threaten on the counter attack.
Former Birmingham manager McLeish, never a popular appointment among Villa fans, was barracked by the home faithful as Fulham stood firm after the break.
But Weimann’s goal sent them home happy – and Martin Jol’s men home with nothing.
